Shanghai, China

Since 2021 Shanghai and Frankfurt, the main financial centres of both countries, agreed to strengthen communication and exchange through forums and dialogues and work together on key issues of mutual interest.

Lujiazui Financial City is the core functional area to Shanghai’s ambition -to become an international financial centre. With more than 6,000 domestic and foreign financial institutions located in Lujiazui, of which 925 are licensed, such as banks, securities firms and insurance companies, it has the highest density of financial markets and institutions in the mainland China. It is also home to over 340 companies on the Fortune 500 list and 134 regional headquarters of multinational corporations. In 2021, the area’s GDP reached RMB 57 billion (roughly about 8 billion euros).

By signing the Memorandum of Understanding, both parties aim to deepen their cooperation and hereby exert positive impact on the international financial system. Lujiazui Financial City and Frankfurt Main Finance joined forces in order to develop especially the following financial areas: fintech, global asset management, and green finance. Another part of the agreement includes their close collaboration at events and financial forums, so that the two financial centres can act together on important issues of global interest.

Lujiazui Financial City is located in Shanghai’s Pudong New Area, facing the waterfront Bunds across the Huangpu River. The often called ‘Wall Street of China’ is the largest financial zone in the mainland, with thousands of banks and financial institutions from China and around the world.

One of Shanghai’s advantages is its excellent workforce environment: the city attracts a great amount of highly educated, young talents with a high proportion of them having overseas study or work experience. Especially for high-level financial talents, Lujiazui Financial City aims to build a new melting pot for their gathering and development.

Since Shanghai is one of the fastest developing cities worldwide, it is domestically and internationally well-connected by land, sea, and air. The Shanghai Pudong International Airport is a major aviation hub for East Asia, and the world’s busiest container port is located in the vicinity of Shanghai. Moreover, the city’s four train stations form an important railway junction, while within the city, the high-speed maglev train as well as light rails and busses transport people from one place to another

China’s most international, cosmopolitan, and prosperous city

The first impression of Shanghai is probably similar to other big cities: traffic, smog and noise. But the closer you get to the centre, the more charm the giant
metropolis unfolds because of its unique mix of history and high-tech, Chinese
and Western lifestyle. Especially popular is the view on Shanghai’s classic
skyline from across the 500m wide Huangpu River, from where you can admire the
modern skyscrapers. Its four tallest landmarks include the second-highest
building in the world, the Shanghai Tower (as of 2022). Besides stunning
architecture, the city offers a number of diverse activities and attractions:
walk and shop along Nanjing Road – an equivalent of New York’s Fifth Avenue,
stroll around in Zhujiajiao Water Town, visit the various types of museums or
enjoy the diversity of the local cuisine. Since Shanghai is a busy city, there
need to be places to calm down like the Central Parkland in the core area of
the financial zone as well as the Lujiazui Central Green Space and Yuyuan
Garden.
