Frankfurt am Main, May 27, 2026<\/b> \u2013 Ten years after the Brexit referendum, the interim assessment for Frankfurt as a financial center is positive. Since 2016, approximately 15,000 additional jobs have been created in Frankfurt\u2019s financial sector, around 60 institutions have established or expanded their operations in Frankfurt, and the volume of additional banking assets has risen to approximately 1.3 trillion euros. Frankfurt has thus maintained its position as the European Union\u2019s leading financial center and strengthened its role in financing the German and European economies.<\/p>

From Frankfurt Main Finance\u2019s perspective, the developments of the past ten years show that Brexit was not only a turning point for Frankfurt but also a catalyst for structural growth. In addition to job creation in the city and the region, the Frankfurt location alone benefited, among other things, from rising trade tax revenues generated by the financial sector (+\u20ac420 million in 2025 compared to 2016), a construction boom (+approx. 350,000 square meters of office space in Frankfurt), the growing importance of international banks, and the successful establishment of key institutions such as the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) and the new EU agency for combating money laundering and terrorist financing, AMLA.<\/p>

This development is far from complete. With new regulatory initiatives such as CRD VI and further location decisions in the context of European competition, Frankfurt Main Finance sees additional opportunities to attract further business, additional assets, and new jobs to Frankfurt. The interim report now presented is therefore explicitly not intended as a final conclusion, but rather as a snapshot of an ongoing transformation process.<\/p>

Mike Josef, Mayor of the City of Frankfurt, says:<\/b> \u201cThe City of Frankfurt is a city steeped in tradition yet young and vibrant. The financial sector has been a defining part of it for centuries and continues to invigorate Frankfurt to this day. The day of the Brexit referendum ten years ago also marked the beginning of a new era of collaboration among numerous participating institutions to make Frankfurt\u2019s voice heard globally in competition with other financial hubs in the EU. We can all be proud that we have succeeded in this. It gives us courage for the future as well.\u201d<\/p>

Oliver Behrens, President of Frankfurt Main Finance, says:<\/b> \u201cWe did not want Brexit, but Frankfurt has seized the opportunities it presented. Ten years after the referendum, the financial center stands stronger than many had expected at the time. Developments in jobs, banking assets, and international relocations show that Frankfurt is holding its own in European competition and has further expanded its strategic importance.\u201d<\/p>

Tobias Vogel, Chairman of the Association of International Banks, says:<\/b> \u201cInternational banks have significantly expanded their presence in Frankfurt in recent years. This has noticeably strengthened Frankfurt\u2019s role as a financial center in financing the German economy. Many key figures demonstrate that foreign banks carry significantly more weight today than they did before the Brexit referendum. This benefits companies in Germany, as well as the federal government, the state, and the city.\u201d<\/p>

Dr. Bastian Bergerhoff, City Treasurer of Frankfurt am Main, says:<\/b> \u201cOver the past ten years, Frankfurt has continued to develop as a strong and resilient business hub.
