Frankfurt Main Finance Turns 18

Frankfurt Main Finance e.V. celebrates its 18th anniversary. Time to take stock and reflect upon 18 milestones.

Frankfurt Main Finance e.V. is celebrating its 18th anniversary. What began in 2008 as a strategic alliance of the politics, business, and civil society has since achieved sustained international success. To mark this occasion, this article highlights 18 milestones from 18 years of successful representation of the city as a business location.

1. Financial Center Cabinet and New Financial Center Strategy

The Financial Center Cabinet met about half a dozen times, chaired by the respective Hessian Minister-President. This is where the course is set for the FMF’s work.

2. Founding of FIRM

In the wake of the financial crisis, the Frankfurt Institute for Risk Management and Regulation (FIRM) was founded in 2009 on the initiative of the FMF.

3. Website as Central Source

The go-to source for figures, data, facts, events, and news about the financial center: the FMF website.

4. Development of the Frankfurt Finance Summit with a Visit by the German Chancellor

At the initiative of FMF, the Chancellor made her first public visit to the financial center in 2011 following the financial crisis to participate in the 1st Frankfurt Finance Summit. The House of Finance Foundation was established on that occasion.

5. Establishment of ISSB & AMLA

With the ISSB (International Sustainability Standards Board) and the AMLA (Anti-Money Laundering Authority), an international standards-setter and another EU supervisory authority are coming to Frankfurt.

6. The Voice of the Financial Hub

More than 22,000 followers and up to 300,000 views on social media. Particularly popular: the new Skyline Stories and Reels.

7. Appointment to the FIC

In 2025, FMF was appointed to the Foreign Investment Council as an advisor to the President of Uzbekistan.

8. Offenbach and Eschborn

The financial center extends beyond city limits: The cities of Eschborn (since 2013) and Offenbach (since 2022) will become active members. The mayors represent their cities on the FMF Executive Board.

9. Launch of the Financial Centre Report

In 2026, the Financial Centre Yearbook was replaced by the new Financial Centre Report. A treasure trove for anyone who loves facts, figures, and data about the financial center.

10. Collaboration with the Vietnamese-German University (VGU)

The Vietnamese-German University (VGU) is set to become a think tank for the development of the financial center. Goethe University and FMF are supporting this effort.

11. Since Brexit: 15,000 Additional Jobs

More than 60 financial institutions have established or expanded their presence in Frankfurt since Brexit. Approximately 15,000 additional jobs subject to social security contributions were created in the financial sector—excluding regulatory positions.

12. Brexit Campaign – Welcome to Frankfurt

Nomination for the Excellence Award: FMF’s Brexit campaign, “Welcome to Frankfurt.” From over 2,000 interviews, 5,200 media reports were generated, achieving a reach of 9 billion.

13. Vice Chair of the WAIFC

The World Association of International Financial Centers (WAIFC) is visiting Frankfurt. FMF provides the Vice Chair.

14. Numerous International Partnerships 

The Frankfurt financial center is a sought-after partner and cooperates with the following financial centers: Astana, Busan, Casablanca, Chengdu, Da Nang, Dubai, Guangzhou, Istanbul, Montreal, Muscat, Beijing, Seoul, Shanghai, and Tokyo.

15. Financial Centre Cup

From 2014 to 2016, Eintracht Frankfurt won the Frankfurt Main Finance Cup as part of the season opener against teams from Milan, Tokyo, and Vigo.

16. FeiF – Experiencing Finance in Frankfurt

Together with the Hessian Ministry of Finance and 14 partners, FMF 2026 launches the “FeiF – Finanzen erleben in Frankfurt” platform with a bell-ringing ceremony on the stock exchange trading floor.

17. World’s Largest Payments Trade Fair

Messe Frankfurt, Frankfurt Economic Development, FRM GmbH, and FMF are joining forces to bring the world’s largest payments trade fair to Frankfurt.

18. The EU’s No. 1 Financial Centre

Since Brexit, the Global Financial Centres Index (GFCI) has ranked Frankfurt as the leading financial center in the EU.
