Three Questions to Matthias Huebner, Managing Director of the Sustainable Finance Cluster

The Sustainable Finance Summit will celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2026. What key challenges and opportunities do you currently see for sustainable finance, and why is dialogue between the financial sector and the real economy more important today than ever before?

The biggest challenge is the widespread myth that we must choose between economic growth and sustainability. The reality is quite the opposite: only those who think and act sustainably—and address promising business models, resource efficiency, and resilient supply chains early on—will still be successful in the market ten years from now. But of course, this transformation also requires financing, which is why close dialogue between banks and companies is essential to foster understanding and develop solutions.

Topics such as transformation, biodiversity, artificial intelligence, and the further development of sustainability regulations are central to this year’s program. What discussions can participants from financial institutions, businesses, and the political sphere expect?

I would like to highlight three aspects in particular:

1) We want honest discussions about the status quo and the challenges of sustainable finance—no sugarcoating, but rather a clear analysis and, based on that, a forward-looking perspective.

2) We want to discuss practical problems and solutions—not just abstract regulations and sustainability goals, but exactly how these impact the day-to-day operations of financial institutions and companies.

3) We want to think outside the box and learn from successful models and perspectives in other countries and regions—after all, it is precisely this international character that sets Frankfurt apart.

Many stakeholders are grappling with the question of how to finance sustainable transformation in practical terms. What practical value does the summit offer participants to help them successfully address these challenges within their organizations?

On the one hand, we’re convinced that the summit, with its rich and diverse two-and-a-half-day program, will provide plenty of “food for thought” as well as the opportunity to delve deeper into topics that are particularly close to your heart.

On the other hand, events like the summit thrive precisely on informal exchanges—whether during a coffee break, over lunch, or at a casual get-together. At the summit, bankers and entrepreneurs can engage in direct conversation and, in addition to exchanging ideas, build personal connections—which have reportedly already led to fruitful business relationships.

This year’s Sustainable Finance Summit, themed “Sustainable Finance: Bridging the Financial and Real Economies,” will take place on October 1 and 2, 2026, at the Frankfurt School. Registration is available at https://www.eventbrite.de/e/sustainable-finance-gipfel-2026-tickets-1980467734306.
