ECB design contest for future euro banknotes has begun

The European Central Bank has launched its design competition for euro banknotes. Designers from across the EU can take part in the official design competition. Creative designs on the themes of “European culture” and “rivers and birds” are being sought.

  • Starting today, designers from all over Europe can apply
  • Application platform open until August 18, 2025
  • ECB Governing Council to decide on final design by the end of 2026; public consultation to take place beforehand

The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched a public design competition for the future euro banknotes. This is the next step in the redesign process for euro banknotes. Taking into account feedback from experts and the general public, the ECB’s Governing Council has already shortlisted two themes. These are “European culture” and “rivers and birds.” The first theme is intended to honor shared cultural heritage sites and important Europeans, while the second theme is intended to highlight the resilience and diversity of our continent’s natural ecosystems. In January, the ECB’s Governing Council also selected possible motifs for the two themes.

The design contest aims to find the best designs for the future euro banknotes. Graphic designers residing in the European Union are eligible to participate. The contest consists of an application phase, followed by a phase in which the designs are submitted. In the application phase, designers must demonstrate that they meet the requirements set out in the competition documents. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of their qualifications and previous work.

Some of them will advance to the second round of the competition, in which they will submit their design proposals. The jury for the design competition, which consists of independent experts, will review the proposals and select up to five per theme.

“The euro is more than a currency – it symbolizes the unity and diversity of Europe. We invite designers from across Europe to take part in the competition and help shape the future of our banknotes. The banknotes should reflect our shared cultural identity and natural heritage,” said ECB President Christine Lagarde.

After the competition closes, the public will have the opportunity to provide feedback on the selected designs. The Governing Council of the ECB is expected to decide on the final design of the new banknotes at the end of 2026. However, we will not be able to hold them in our hands until a few years later. Further information on the competition is available on the ECB’s website and in the Official Journal of the European Union. Designers interested in participating are invited to submit their entries by 12:00 noon CET on August 18.
